But what exactly is a "Guinguette"?
A tavern is a popular cabaret in Paris suburbs also officiating as a restaurant and often as a place to dance.
The origin of the term most likely is the word "Stingy" designating a white wine sour and cheap product in Ile-de-France.
The taverns were a prominent subject of painting in late nineteenth and early twentieth. French cinema of the inter-war period has also staged the dance halls (see "Films featuring dance halls").
The prohibition of swimming in rivers caused the decline of taverns. The ban was motivated by reasons of hygiene (water quality deteriorated in the years 60-70) and safety (risks due to traffic of barges and drowning). In the 1960s, they spend in the field of nostalgia.
Since the 1980s, there has been a revival, particularly in the loops of the Marne. Also note that an association, Culture taverns, is dedicated to the conservation of heritage and tradition of dance halls.
